I’ve been catching up on Netflix during my time off between productions (I work in TV) and it’s been a pretty good month. For one, it’s Award season which helps and Netflix have been increasing the amount of films they’re producing for consideration.
However, this typically means a lot of serious films which take a lot of concentration. But they’ve also thrown in a bunch of trash TV and comedies into the mix too. This has made this years January a lot more of a mixed bag and far more enjoyable than previous years.

So let’s go! Check out my Netflix’s recommendations, what to avoid and what’s still to come!
Netflix films and shows you should avoid
Shockingly, there’s only on film on my do not watch list and that’s critically acclaimed “The Wonder“. Personally, I only watched it because of Florence Pugh but sadly this film was a waste of life. 2 hours of it in fact. Pugh was the only good thing about this movie, as the story line bored me to tears. I give this a hard pass.

Best Netflix films and shows from January 2023
Emily in Paris
It’s season 3, surely there should be a decline in entertainment for this story? Nope. It’s still great. Even more, I feel it’s getting better. The business side, the relationships and the marketing ideas.
The Circle USA
I was gutted when I heard the Circle was cancelled. Luckily, the USA version is still going strong. And it’s not half bad. Is it as good as the UK version? No, but it’s a good watch when nothing is on.
Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery
My initial thoughts before watching this weren’t great. A sequel? I wasn’t a huge fan of the first film but it was a good watch. I was very wrong about this movie. It feels like a whole different movie. Yes, Daniel Craig is still the lead detective but it feels nothing like the first movie. It’s actually quite good and really funny in parts.
The Swimmers
I love a true story. This is on for the books. It’s an incredible story about two Syrian sisters who cross the Mediterranean Sea in a busted up boat risking their lives for a better life. The crossing is one of the most scariest things I’ve seen in a long time.
The Volcano: Rescue from Whakaari
I watched this movie a week after I returned from New Zealand. I never knew about this and just visited a volcano myself. It’s fair to say, it scared the life out of me. The camera footage and interviews are just unbelievable. If this doesn’t sell it for you….Leonardo Di Caprio produced it!
The Good Nurse
Another true story, but this one has Oscar winning actors in it. It’s gripping, dark and twisty. Love it! Not talked about enough so go watch it.
All Quiet on the Western Front
You’d think that World War I movies have been done to death and all possible ground had been covered. However, this Award nominated movie about the Germans side of the story gives a fresh but dark version of events. It’s an eye opening piece of cinema!
You People
This movie is hilariously and intentionally uncomfortable. A refreshing romcom with a modern day twist. Everyone should watch this.
What’s on Netflix in February 2023
This Australian teen wants to be the youngest person to sail solo across the world. Crazy girl! True Spirit (2023) is out on Friday.
Bill Russell: Legend (2023) is about NBA champion and civil rights icon Bill Russell‘s legacy on and off the court. I enjoy a good sports documentary
Hey You (Season 4 – Part 1)! Joe is back or whatever he’s calling himself now in England. Is it weird I’m excited to see his next round of victims?

You know what we need. A romcom! You know who’s really good at Romcoms? Reese Witherspoon! Her new film starring along side Ashton Kutcher is called Your Place or Mine (2023) and out on 10th February!
Who doesn’t love a cheesy dating show. Netflix next dating show is Perfect Match (Season 1) Brand new dating show instead of a new series of one of the many great shows that Netflix cancelled. Sounds about right.
Jada Pinkett Smith brings us a dramatized documentary, of the rise and reign of Queen Njinga of Angola. African Queens: Njinga (2022) is Pinkett Smith first non red table project since “that Oscars incident”.

Another story about someone living what seeming looks like the perfect life. We’ve seen this story several times before but The Strays (2023) does have a creepy mysterious edge to it.
I feel like I’ve been waiting a small lifetime for these modern day Goonies to return to Netflix. Finally, Outer Banks (Season 3) isn’t too far away and another treasure hunt is sure to follow.
Lastly, a fun comedy called We Have a Ghost (2023) starring David Harbour, Jahi Di’Allo Winston, Anthony Mackie and the fabulous Jennifer Coolidge. This new family moves into a new house and finds a ghost in their house. They film it and put it on the internet and the ghost becomes famous. New. I’m intrigued.
