This Remake Hits Different
I loved the original trilogy of this movie. I was even invited to the Premier of the third installment, so this franchise has a real place in my heart. I didn’t rewatch the original movie beforehand so I had fresh eyes and mind for the story. I didn’t want to directly compare the two and I think this was a smart choice. I honestly feel this is the best live action movie I’ve seen in a very long time it was visually stunning filled with emotion and truly magical.

A Dragon Riding Star
Mason Thames was the perfect cast for Hiccup. He showed a range of emotions and made us fall in love with hiccup all over again. The dragon riding scenes looked a little off sometimes (not his fault!), but overall those scenes were visually some of the best on a long shot! He had me in tears by the end. Well done Mason. The only thing I can really criticize is his hair. It was very 2010’s One Direction style, which was very distracting and not very Viking like.

We’ve Got Dragons!
Look! Dragons! Dragons everywhere! This is a heavily CGI movie so my biggest concern was that they wouldn’t be able to bring every single dragon to life in as much detail as was needed for this film. As far as I’m concerned, they nailed it every single time. There were so many different varieties of dragons and I was really partial to the scenes where dragons just filled the skies and the screen. I want a dragon!

Hiccups Pals
Hiccups training buddies were probably the only part of the movie which I wasn’t really on board with, sadly. I think the animated version of these characters was better because they just brought a lot more comic relief to this movie. I just found their jokes a little bland, and they didn’t hit as well as the animated version. Sorry guys.

The Love Interest
Even though Astrid doesn’t look anything like the animated version, I think they picked the right actress to play her. Nico Parker brings the character to life. She’s strong, smart, ambitious and wants to kill dragons to help her village. She understands the legacy. The only part of this connection on scene I didn’t like was them both going on a dragon ride, which felt a lot like the scene from Aladdin “A Whole New World”, which felt very corny. Also, who kisses the guy they like for the first time in front of their new fella’s Dad? No one! Sorry, that bit should’ve been cut.

Team Toothless Or Team Heartless
Toothless is as cute, funny and adorable as the last animated Toothless. They’ve really brought this dragon to life. Toothless is the heart and soul of this movie and his bond with Hiccup really brings a lot of emotion to the movie. There is a real, true friendship here, and it’s really beautiful to watch.

Summary
“This is one of the best live-action remakes I’ve seen in a very long time. It hit me hard in the feels and was a truly magical experience. It’s a visually stunning film, with some incredible scenes that are amazing to watch on the big screen. This is one of those movies I would watch again in a heartbeat. What’s not to love about a movie about dragons?”
