Where do I even start?
This was one of the weirdest, oddest horror movies I’ve ever seen and I’m still unsure after 24 hour reflection if I liked it or not. It’s one of those movies that tries to create a lot of shock value and then you need to process it over time.

What happened…
The movie is based on a family who move to a resort where things are not as they seem. Stereotypical horror set up right? Well, that’s what it seemed to start with but when things begin to unfold they start make more less sense and more odder by the second. I still don’t understand what really happened…

On the Hunt
Our leading lady, Hunter Schafer (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes and Euphoria) is a marvel to watch. She kept me grounded through the chaos and was fantastic to watch. Schafer gave an emotional performance but she’s not a final girl in my eyes.

Is Cuckoo scary?
I found Cuckoo more of a mystery movie than a horror. It’s not my type horror. Yes, there’s a few jump scares but it’s more disturbing than actually scary. There’s a lot of WTF moments than I want to scream and hide my eyes.

The Killer was definitely Cuckoo
The part of the movie that annoyed me the most was “the killer”. They’re supposed to be living out in the wilds, not of sound mine (obviously) and terrorising the resort. But they’re presented as completely clean, has a lovely coat, perfect red lipstick and better eyeliner than I can do sober! As much as I found them disturbing, it was all a bit ridiculous.

Forbidden Flute
What was more ridiculous than that was by far the flute. Which is never good in a movie. Last time I saw this was in Alien: Covenant and I still can’t watch that scene without laughing either. Seriously, laughable.

Summary
This isn’t a movie, it’s a film. I believe that films are arty which are up to opinion. You love it or hate it. Movies are made for entertainment. Cuckoo is a film. I thought the movie was good but the ending was horrendous and mostly didn’t make a lot of sense. It’s a marmite kind of movie. I think this film had a lot of promise but it’s just not for me. I’ve watched a lot of movies lately that feature the brutality of woman. I’ve had my fill. No more please. This was enough. Leave us alone.
