Is Tim Burton Back?
It feels like years since we’ve had a proper Tim Burton movie. That’s because it has been years. Frankenweenie came out in 2012 but it last great Tim Burton movie for me was Corpse Bride in 2005. Nearly 20 years! This movie was everything I expected from a Tim Burton movie. It’s filled with imagination, crazy characters and it’s a wild ride. I don’t know what has kicked started Tim Burton’s creativity again with Wednesday as well in the works again for season 2, but I’m loving it. More please!

Jenna Ortega Was Born For This Movie
Tim Burton made the right call with bringing Jenna Ortega into the mix. She’s exactly the right person to play Lydia Deetz’s daughter. She’s got the right look, she’s a great actress and she brings that spooky haunting quality which is perfect for the movie. Our newest scream queen is immersed into the Beetlejuice Universe without looking like Wednesday or her Scream character we know her for. Our scream queen has done it again. But it would be nice to see her in something else a little lighthearted, less dark and showcasing her acting skills more. Breaking out of the Halloween genre would be interesting to see.

Lack Of After Life
The movie spends a lot of time in the land of the living. This was quite disappointing as the previous movie jumps straight into it within minutes. We have to wait quite a while for the main characters to even jump back into the chaos. There’s snippets of the other side for sure, but not enough. Also, I wasn’t really keen on the dead police. I thought that was a bit weird and didn’t really make sense. It felt like this was just a random piece to glue things together.

Visually Better In The Right Places
One of the best parts of this sequel was the upgrade in the CGI. This type of movie was in much need of it. The original Beetlejuice looks old when it comes to CGI so the sequel gets a massive upgrade. What I enjoyed was that they used it wisely. Where they didn’t need to use CGI they used puppets and SFX which was incredible to look at. The vast amount of dead characters used SFX and incredible costumes. However, the sand worm still looked a bit dated and a lot like the original movie but I loved that. This gave a nod to the original and I can’t imagine it looking any other way.

It’s Dead Good
The dead characters were incredible. Each character was styled differently to different ways they could have died. So each frame you’re looking at them to see what tragic demise they came to. The costume and Make up teams much have had a field day trying to get all these extras dressed and dead looking. They all looked incredible and hats off to them. Hopefully there’s an award nomination in there somewhere for all this hard work.

Musically Disappointing
The original Beetlejuice is famous for the song “Day-O” where he possesses the family, gets them to mine the song and dance to it. I was expecting something similar in the sequel but was let down by the song choice. Personally, I think if they picked a different song it could have been more entertaining. As it was a song I didn’t know or like, it bring the vibe down and I was left disappointed.

Drop Dead Delores
I loved Delores character. When she starts off in parts and puts herself together, I thought that was done very well. She moved hauntingly and gracefully. The soul sucking aspect was visually shocking and I love her stapled look throughout. She reminds me of a dark, pissed off Sally from A Nightmare before Christmas, another of Tim Burton’s creations. Personally, I felt her character wasn’t used enough and was forgotten about half way through. It was a waste and could have brought something more to the story line.

Summary
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, is full of imagination, crazy characters and visually stunning sets but the story gave up half way. I enjoyed the new characters which gave new life to the sequel and I can’t get enough of the Bobs. Unfortunately, some of the story felt pieced together like Delores body. There’s bound to be a sequel and hopefully more thought will go into the story as well as the visuals.
